A player’s position at the table is very important. Having position gives you more information about your opponents’ betting patterns and makes it cheaper and more effective to bluff. It is also crucial to know your opponents’ hands, as the strength of their hands can be hidden. For example, pocket kings on the flop could mean doom if someone has a large pair of aces or a flush.

The first player to act after a deal has the privilege or obligation of opening the betting. This means that he or she must place in the pot the number of chips (representing money) required by the rules of the poker variant being played. After each player has acted once, the dealer reveals the next community card and the second betting interval commences.

At the end of the final betting round, if more than one player remains, they reveal their cards and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand according to the poker variant being played wins the pot.
