People play the lottery because they like to gamble. But there\u2019s more to it than that: they\u2019re being lured by the promise of instant wealth in an age of inequality and limited social mobility. They\u2019re also being conditioned to feel the need to play to keep up with their peers, a phenomenon called FOMO (\u201cfear of missing out\u201d).<\/p>\n
The odds of winning are really low. But people still try to come up with quotes-unquote systems for maximizing their chances, such as choosing lucky numbers or buying tickets at certain stores or at specific times of day. And they know that they\u2019re not really increasing their odds by playing more frequently or buying more tickets for a particular drawing.
