Poker is a card game in which players place bets on the strength of their hands. Each player must either call the maximum bet made on his or her hand, or fold. Players can also choose to raise (increase) the previous bet. Once a player has called the highest bet, he or she collects the pot.<\/p>\n
If there are no raises on a hand, it is a “check,” and no one else can increase the bet. If a player wants to add to the betting pool, he or she must say “raise.” The other players will then be able to choose whether to call the raised amount or fold their hand.<\/p>\n
Some players play recklessly, and these are referred to as fish. They often last for only a few minutes, as they are unable to out-bluff others. Taking this approach in life can lead to you missing out on a good opportunity, such as landing a job ahead of someone with a better CV.<\/p>\n
In some games, there may be side pots as well. The main pot is the one that all players fight over, while the side pots consist of those bets that are not called by the winner of the main pot. The side pots are usually formed by the players “cutting” a low-denomination chip from the original pot every time there is more than one raise.
